An Ephesians 4 Marriage & Home!
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:2-3 [NIV]
When friends come to your home, do they see the same marital peace they see when you’re out in public together, or is it something different?
That gap between your public and private married life, if it exists, is definitely worth addressing. Jason and I often say, “Our public and private lives are the same… no shame.” In other words, they’re identical twins; so what you see publicly is what you’ll get privately. 😊
In Ephesians 4, Paul gives us another sample blueprint for a home where peace actually lives, fostering humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love. This truth means that we, as Christians, have God’s grace to ensure that His presence genuinely rests in our marriage and in our home daily.
Maintaining that bond of peace requires two people to work together according to God’s design for marriage consistently. Although each spouse has different roles, they’re equal and complementary to each other. Husbands are to love and lead their wives willingly; this promotes PEACE in the family. Likewise, wives are to submit and support graciously; this creates POWER in the family. As both spouses continue to move in sync under the same Spirit, blessings manifest in our marriages and homes!
However, having a peaceful home doesn’t automatically mean things will consistently run smoothly every day. Even strong marriages face hard days, sharp words, and moments where patience wears thin. Yet, God’s grace covers it all! What matters most is the daily return to humility, patience, and gentleness.
When this mindset becomes second nature in your marriage, it will inherently radiate into your home. Remember: God’s Spirit will always rest in homes where couples are actively pursuing unity and peace. Moreover, people will sense it each time they walk in the door!
Reflection Questions:
- Are our public and private married lives identical twins? If not, why not?
- Can people step into our home and sense God’s presence and peace without us having to say anything?
Praying for Peace In Your Marriage:
Father, thank You for the peace that comes from Your Spirit rather than from perfect circumstances. We confess there are days we bring more patience to people outside our home than to each other. Forgive us and teach us to be humble and gentle first, especially when it’s hardest. Also, Father, remind us that love bears all things instead of keeping score. Move our marriage toward the same peace in private that others see in public. Lastly, we pray Your presence be so evident in our home that visitors sense it and glorify You; in Jesus’ name we pray… Amen.
To Your Marriage Success,
Ros
