When Sincere Friendship Comes Before Love

Isaac, Rebekah, and the Friendship That Made a Marriage

“Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; she was a comfort to him after his mother’s death.” Genesis 24:67 [NIV]

Think about the earthly person you love most. Long before you ever said the words, you knew. Somewhere between the conversations, the laughter, and the quiet kindnesses, a friendship took root, and love grew out of it.

Isaac and Rebekah show us that same pattern. Genesis tells us Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent, married her, loved her, and found her to be a great comfort for him. Notice the order. Honor, respect, and genuine care and friendship came first, and the deep feelings followed.

We often expect passion to carry a marriage, but passion was never meant to stand alone. Flourishing marriages are built on faith, sincere friendship, mutual respect, and real enjoyment of each other’s company. Delighting in one another is not a luxury; it is part of the foundation. And when we serve one another with kindness and treat our spouse as a trusted friend, we lay the covenant foundation God builds a lifetime of love upon.

So let us make friendship one of the key pillars of the marriage covenant. It’s the quiet strength that can help keep your marriage healthy and whole!

Reflection Questions:

  1. When was the last time we laughed together and enjoyed each other’s company?
  2. If we’ve lost sight of our friendship, what crowded it and got in the way?
  3. What small step can we take to rekindle the friendship and genuine warmth we had when we were dating?

A Prayer for Your Friendship & Marriage:

Heavenly Father, thank You for designing marriage to begin with friendship. Thank You for Isaac and Rebekah, who show us that love grows where honor, kindness, and comfort are planted first.

Forgive us for the seasons when we were too busy, too tired, or too distracted to treat each other as friends. Restore the joy, the laughter, and the sincere companionship we once shared. Teach us to listen well, serve gladly, and delight in one another again.

Make our home a place of comfort for each other, and build our covenant on faith, friendship, and mutual respect. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
